Aged Care Seating Seminar

Technology Park Function Centre
Inspired by all the seating challenges faced by therapists who consult with Unicare Health in search of better aged care seating solutions, Unicare Health supported the industry last Friday by hosting an interactive aged care seating seminar.
The goal of this seminar was to educate therapists and other health care professionals working in aged care, the management techniques surrounding seating and positioning.
Considering the practical length of time a resident in aged care is seated, selecting an effective seating system that responds to a resident’s pressure care needs, mobility needs, positioning needs, posture needs, safety, continence care and comfort is imperative.
To seat and position a client effectively, the principles of positioning and seating intervention as related to the aged must be accurately considered and impact factors addressed.
Led by Occupational Therapist and Product Consultant – Annette Terranova, who has over 25 years of experience working in aged care, Unicare Health hosted nearly a hundred Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Nurses and other health professionals over two seminar sessions at Technology Park Function Centre in Bentley.
Annette started her session talking about the principles of positioning and seating intervention as related to the aged. She then discussed factors that impact seating and positioning in residential aged care as well as in the community.
She then took discussions further into client assessment and measurements, stressing the importance of taking correct measurements for scripting complex seating systems.
During her presentation, Annette drew on first hand experiences working with attending Occupational Therapists in the room, many of whom had consulted with Annette on previous occasions to help prescribe the optimal seating solution for their aged care clients. Annette talked about how prescribing the optimal seating solution for some of these clients has rewarded positive outcomes, helped them become mobile again, giving them back their quality of life.
David Westbrook, Unicare Health’s scripted equipment specialist, also contributed to the session and passionately talked about factors to consider when scripting powered seating systems and cushions. David also conducted a brief session on ROHO cushions for therapists eager to learn more.
Participants at the seminar left very informed, with 100% of all attendees who returned their feedback forms agreeing that this seminar
– was relevant to them and their role
– taught them new skills/concepts to apply during work and
– has improved their confidence as a healthcare professional
