“The aim of our equipment information booth is to educate our aging community of the benefits associated of preserving one’s independence and how that can be achieved through assistive technology aids. The more people are educated about equipment supports available and how to use them, the more they can be encouraged to regain or retain their confidence and gain greater control over their independence to actively participate in society.”

Using wellness and reablement approaches to deliver support to older people has been a key objective of the Commonwealth Government’s home-based care programs. (view source)

Wellness and reablement approaches to health care are closely associated with ‘successful ageing’ and ‘healthy ageing,’ concepts that emphasise improved wellbeing for older people through active engagement in physical, social and cultural activities.

Wellness emphasises identifying needs, aspirations and goals. It acknowledges and builds on strengths and has a focus on integrating support services as a path to greater independence and quality of life.

Reablement emphasises assisting people to regain functional capacity and improve independence. Similar to rehabilitation, it is goal-oriented and aims at full recovery where possible – it seeks to enable people to live their lives to the fullest.

Have a go day Rockingham 2019

Organized by the Seniors Recreation Council of WA, Have a Go Day in Rockingham provided an excellent opportunity for local groups, service providers, government departments and businesses to promote wellness & reablement, independent living & rehabilitation and healthcare activities to seniors. The event attracted more than 850 seniors and over 80 exhibitors attended the show to promote their support for Rockingham’s aging community.

To make sense of these buzzwords and government initiatives to enable seniors to live safely at home for longer, Unicare Health’s free assistive equipment information booth was a highlight at Have a Go Day with an adopted new look to connect with seniors keen to learn about assistive technology use to achieve their independent living, rehabilitation and reablement goals.

Hundreds of enthusiastic seniors took advantage of the opportunity to hop into a mobility scooter, play with tap turners and easy pour kettles and asked for advice on products to assist with aging conditions such as Arthritis, Dementia and Parkinson’s.

Seniors at the show were amazed by the number of intelligent assistive products they didn’t know existed.
