CuroCell® AREA Zone – Self-adjusting Pumpless Air Mattress
The CuroCell® AREA Zone by Care of Sweden is a pumpless air mattress replacement system with self-adjusting technology. It has a SWL of 230kg and used as an aid in the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries up to category 3.

The core of the mattress contains nine air cells divided into zones, which adapt and provide automatic pressure care. These cells are enveloped in multiple layers of high quality foam to reduce shearing forces. A heel slope function reduces pressure on the heels.
This mattress comes with a removable elastic and flexible cover that is machine washable at 95°C. It has a well-documented standard of hygiene and has welded seams to prevent fluids and dirt from entering. The soft and elastic material is vapour permeable which reduces risk of skin macerations.
The CuroCell® AREA Zone has very good pressure redistribution properties and has received a rating of “High pressure relief” in external tests.

Goals
This study was conducted to determine and document the effect of the CuroCell® AREA Zone in the prevention of pressure injuries, for patients undergoing emergency hip surgery and how these patients rated the mattress in terms of comfort, turning and repositioning.
Summary of Study
Over a period of six months, all hip fracture patients admitted into the orthopaedic ward at Kristianstad Central Hospital in Sweden were prescribed a bed with a CuroCell® AREA Zone mattress. Staff were trained in pressure injuries, difference between pressure injuries and incontinence associated dermatitis, risk factors, preventive measures, nutrition, positioning and mattress use.
Summary of Findings
At the end of the study, only 5 out of 167 patients developed a stage 1 or 2 pressure injury in the holiday months when the ward was understaffed and during winter time when heavy snowfall put additional pressure on the emergency ward and resulted in long waiting times. No pressure injuries were sustained in other months.
93.6% of patients rated the mattress to be comfortable, 88% rated it easy to turn and reposition on the mattress and 96.6% suggested that the mattress fulfilled their expectations.
Conclusion
This clinical report concludes that the CuroCell® AREA Zone, when combined with other interventions, works very well in the prevention of pressure ulcers for hip fracture patients undergoing emergency surgery.
