Unicare Health would like to thank Katrina Liddiard, Occupational Therapy Lecturer at Edith Cowan University for inviting us to facilitate third year Occupational Therapy student labs on Seating for Powered Mobility.
Annette Terranova, clinical educator and trainer at Unicare Health, took great pleasure in reviewing the clinical objectives of seating systems for powered wheelchairs with 60 third year occupational therapy students across 3 labs.
Equipped with an array of seating components such as JAY cushions, ROHO, JAY backrests and Whitmyer headrests, Annette introduced students to the components of a powered wheelchair seating system and provided an introduction to the clinical considerations which underlie the use and configuration of these components. Annette drew examples from her experience in prescribing seating systems, highlighting features to look for in seating components to meet specific client needs.
The third year OT undergraduates at ECU enjoyed an insightful time at these labs, steering Shoprider Power Chairs, looking inside cushions, examining backrests and adjusting headrests to appreciate how different materials and technologies relate to improved client comfort and function.
To meet the requirements for Covid19 restrictions, students were reminded to adhere to social distancing regulations, wash their hands before entering the labs, wear gloves when exploring equipment and protect equipment surfaces with disposable bags.
“I just wanted to say again a massive thank you for today. As always Unicare has offered our ECU OT students a fantastic opportunity to develop their clinical reasoning. I had excellent feedback from some of them who really found your session gave them a lot more confidence. I think they’ll be much stronger therapists as a result, and will certainly know who to come to for advice in the future.” Katrina Liddiard – Lecturer, Occupational Therapy, School of Medical and Health Science, Edith Cowan University
Unicare Health is thankful for the opportunity to introduce undergraduates at ECU to the practical aspects of seating for powered mobility and is thrilled to be introduced as an educational reference point at the start of their Occupational Therapy careers.
“As industry leaders, we are thankful to be able to contribute towards building a capable generation of therapists to work with us in our quest to improve patient care. As technologies are continuously being improved, ongoing education is the key to prescribing optimal equipment solutions for specific needs. Offering quality education is our way of giving back as a socially responsible business.”
