Edith Cowan University invites Unicare Health to provide Manual Handling equipment training again

Edith Cowan University Unicare Health Hoist Training

Unicare Health would like to thank Melanie Day, Occupational Therapy Lecturer at Edith Cowan University, for inviting us again this year to provide Manual Handling equipment training for 54 Occupational Therapy undergraduates advancing into Residential Aged Care placements.

Placements in Residential Aged Care forms an integral part of a student’s Occupational Therapy (OT) education at Edith Cowan University (ECU). It provides students with opportunities to practice new skills, model after their seniors, and explore the application of didactic and theoretical knowledge acquired in class.

As part of their course, students are required to participate in 1,000 hours of work placements, clinical fieldwork and practice education. These are mandatory experiences to prepare students for their future work as an OT.

Facilitated by Unicare Health’s clinical educator and trainer, Annette, students were taught to understand the fundamental features & benefits of Manual Handling equipment, appreciate Australian Standards related to lifting slings and apply different lifting and transfer techniques to manage safe patient transfers.

Starting with the basics, Annette introduced the different types of Manual Handling equipment commonly used in Residential Aged Care.

These include standing aids such as the RoMedic Return and Quickmove, standing hoists such as the Ansa Salsa and Oxford Journey and full body lifting hoists such as the Ansa Sonata and Oxford Advance.

Annette explained when and how to use these pieces of equipment and discussed their suitability for clients with different needs.

She also discussed the different types of yokes and frames as well as powered options on lifting hoists.

Students were also taught how to read the safety labels sewn on slings, measure a client for a sling, understand Australian Standards related to lifting slings and how to correctly attach slings to hoists.

Working in groups, students were assigned tasks to develop confidence in performing safe transfers using different Manual Handling equipment.

Each student had a chance playing the role of an OT and client to fully understand how these pieces of equipment provide a safe transfer solution for both user and caregiver.

Annette provided lots of practical and safety tips during her training and taught students useful skills such as how to get a sling under a client and how to avoid skin tears when hoisting an aged client.

Unicare Health would like to thank Melanie for inviting us to be part of ECU’s education program. We enjoyed a fantastic time with your OT students and trust that the knowledge and skills we have shared will add significant value to their residential aged care placements.

We are thrilled to have been told how valuable our training sessions have been and grateful to be invited by ECU to do it again this year.

“As industry leaders, we are thankful to be able to contribute towards building a capable generation of therapists to work with us in our quest to improve patient care. As technologies are continuously being improved, ongoing education is the key to prescribing optimal equipment solutions for specific needs. Offering quality education is our way of giving back as a socially responsible business.”
