The Pilbara Region of Western Australia
Educational Tour
17-19 June 2019
Earlier this month, Annette Terranova, Geoff Thomas and Pearl Chan from Unicare Health visited Karratha, Roebourne and Port Hedland – three towns in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia.
As part of Unicare Health’s support for WA Country Health and regional healthcare partners, the team provided valuable equipment-related education sessions at Karratha Health Campus, Hedland Health Campus and Karlarra Aged Care. They also joined community service provider VisAbility on community visits to assist with equipment prescriptions for NDIS participants.
“Unicare Health is thrilled to have supported WA Country Health & Aged Care Services in the Pilbara with Pressure Care education and equipment support. We would like to thank the following organizations, including staff, patients, clients and residents for your warm hospitality during our tour. Our trip would not have been as rewarding without your participation and support.”

The Pilbara
The Pilbara is a large, dry, thinly populated region in the north of Western Australia. It is known for its Aboriginal people, its ancient landscapes, red earth, vast mineral deposits and a global biodiversity hotspot for subterranean fauna.
The region has an estimated population of 61,688 as of June 2018. The Pilbara covers an area of 502,000 km2, which includes some of Earth’s oldest rock formations. It includes landscapes of coastal plains and mountain ranges with cliffs and gorges.
The area is known for its petroleum, natural gas and iron ore deposits, which contribute significantly to Australia’s economy. Other than mining, pastoral activities as well as fishing and tourism are the main industries.

Educational Tour
Annette, Geoff and Pearl from Unicare Health visited Karratha, Roebourne and Port Hedland – three towns in the Pilbara in the week following 17 June 2019. The team provided valuable equipment-related education sessions at hospitals, residential aged care facilities and even joined local allied health partners on community appointments to assist with equipment prescriptions for NDIS participants.
“It was lovely to see how the equipment we previously supplied at Karratha Health Campus and Hedland Health Campus being put to good use.”
As Silver Chain‘s preferred equipment provider for community aged care, Annette and Pearl also visited the Silver Chain day centre in Hedland and had a chat to staff to learn about their challenges providing care in the region. “Understanding how Silver Chain provides care in the Pilbara and the challenges they face will enable us to plan for better ways to assist their clients with equipment solutions.”
A highlight of the trip included community visits to assist with equipment prescriptions for NDIS participants with occupational therapist Marichu Mills from VisAbility.
