In 2018, Unicare Health launched the campaign #stopthepressure with a mission to stop pressure injuries from happening in our healthcare industry.

Pressure injuries are the 3rd most costly health condition behind cardiovascular disease and cancer. They are preventable causes of pain, suffering and loss of life.

#stopthepressure included a series of educational events designed to create awareness, deliver education and introduce the latest solutions in pressure injury prevention and management for therapists and clinicians working in hospitals, aged care and disability.

Through Unicare Health’s strength and influence in the industry, #stopthepressure drew the attention and active participation from hundreds of therapists and clinicians promoting the same cause.

Riding on the success of #stopthepressure, Unicare Health has taken further steps deliver updated pressure care education to regional healthcare providers to address their unique needs and circumstances.

Just this month, Unicare Health delivered another impactful Pressure Management Seminar in Bunbury. This event attracted over 50 therapists and clinicians working for WA Country Health and other regional service providers.

As current leaders in the delivery of Pressure Care education in Western Australia, Unicare Health’s goal is to

  • increase the awareness of pressure injuries amongst healthcare professionals working in hospitals, aged care and disability and empower them with the skills necessary to prevent these injuries from happening
  • provide healthcare professionals with updated knowledge and clinical practices for the effective prescription of pressure care equipment to treat and manage pressure injuries for individuals

Unicare Health’s clinical educator and trainer, Annette Terranova, shared with seminar participants, updated pressure care knowledge and clinical practices gained from her participation at the National Pressure Advisory Panel (NPUAP) 2019 Annual Conference in America, National Aged Care Symposium 2019 in Brisbane, 20th Annual Meeting of European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel in Rome and Wounds Australian National Conference 2018.

In her seminar, Annette discussed new pressure injury standards and guidelines, intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing pressure injury development, new repositioning techniques to prevent pressure injuries, considerations for the selection of support surfaces and pressure care equipment in regional healthcare systems and more.

Seminar participants indicated on their feedback forms that this seminar

  • was relevant to them and their role
  • taught them new skills/concepts to apply during work and
  • has improved their confidence as a healthcare professional
