Aged Care Equipment Information Sessions
Silver Chain Social Centre
15 – 19 July 2019
“Unicare Health would like to thank Silver Chain for inviting us to share expert safety knowledge on mobility aids and home care products with over 100 carers and clients over 5 information sessions at the Bentley Social Centre this week. We are proud to be Silver Chain’s preferred equipment provider and glad to have a chance as industry leaders to encourage older people to adopt safer living practices at home.”
The purpose of these sessions was to make carers and older people aware of the risks associated with improper use of equipment such as pushing someone seated on a 4 wheeled walker or driving a mobility scooter on the road.
Safety products such as easy pour kettles and shower chairs was also introduced to encourage older people to think about using aids to prevent unnecessary accidents at home.
These information sessions for Silver Chain were championed by Unicare Health’s clinical educator and trainer, Annette Terranova, who has over 30 years of experience as a clinician and consultant within the aged care sector. Annette has significant experience in prescribing products to promote safe and effective manual handling, seating and positioning, falls prevention, dementia care, mobility and pressure injury prevention, and has assisted hundreds of therapists and clinicians with education in these areas and prescribing the optimal equipment solution for specific needs.
Annette compared different types of mobility aids such as 4 wheeled seat walkers, wheelchairs and mobility scooters and talked about their features and suitability for different needs. She encouraged her audience to be intelligent and think about issues such as ease of folding, ease of transportation in the car, weight of products etc when making equipment choices.
Safer living practices to encourage bathroom safety was also discussed as falls in older people commonly occur in wet areas. Annette touched on topics such as when to consider a shower stool vs a shower chair, when to consider an over toilet frame or a raised toilet seat.
Discussions on the suitability of a wide range of home care equipment such as assistive devices to help perform tasks such as cooking, dressing, and grooming was also included in these information sessions so that older people become aware of products such as stocking aids to better manage daily living tasks.
Thank you
