Wheelchair Seating Adjustments Workshop

At Unicare Health, we work with therapists on a daily basis to prescribe the optimal wheelchair and seating system based on specific client’s needs. We also assist therapists with performing wheelchair adjustments and often help with training their clients to self-propel confidently and safely.
In response to popular demand by avid therapists wanting to learn how to perform basic wheelchair seating adjustments on their own, Unicare Health responded to our budding therapist fans last Friday by hosting two interactive Wheelchair Seating Adjustments Workshops.
The goal of these interactive workshops was to help therapists learn how to perform hands-on adjustments to their client’s wheelchairs, to improve positioning, performance and accessibility. Through the process, therapists would also gain an understanding of wheelchair seating system design.
This workshop was led by David Westbrook, an experienced scripted equipment specialist with 8 years of experience working in healthcare. David works as an expert consultant within the disability sector and has special interests in powered wheelchair scripting, modifications and customizations. On a daily basis, he works very closely with therapists in getting to know clients on a personal level, understanding their needs, their daily functions and goals, and assists with scripting and modifications of equipment to deliver that optimal solution to suit an individual’s specific needs.
Therapists who attended these workshops were provided necessary tools and taught how to adjust the following components on manual and powered wheelchairs:
- Backrest (depth*, height, angle)
- Headrest (height, depth, rotation, angle)
- Legrest (length, angle)
- Footrest (placement, angle)
Therapists at these workshops left very informed, with 100% of all attendees who returned their feedback forms agreeing that this workshop
- was relevant to them and their role
- taught them new skills/concepts to apply during work and
- has improved their confidence as a healthcare professional
