Bunbury Golf Club
As part of Unicare Health’s support for WA country health and regional healthcare providers, our training team made the trip to Bunbury earlier this month to deliver another impactful clinical education seminar focused on pressure care prevention and clinical strategies to prevent these largely avoidable injuries.
Information presented in this seminar was based on the 2019 International Clinical Practice Guideline for the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries released by the The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP), the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), and the Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance (PPIAP). This guideline was developed to provide evidence-based recommendations for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries that could be referenced by health professionals globally.
The contents of this seminar was developed for allied health professionals and clinical staff with a genuine interest in Pressure Injury Prevention, where updated education on the Development, Prevention and Treatment process through better repositioning techniques and support surfaces would contribute to better patient outcomes.
Attendees included therapists and clinical staff from Juniper, Bethanie, CapeCare, Baptistcare, Therapy Focus, MSWA, Silver Chain & St John Of God Bunbury Hospital.
This workshop was presented by Unicare Health’s clinical educator, Annette Terranova, an occupational therapist and trainer with over 30 years experience working in healthcare. Annette has worked extensively as a clinician and consultant within the aged care sector. Her passion surrounds pressure management, manual handling and seating, leading to her participation in National and International Conferences and Events to keep abreast of the latest developments in these areas.
Annette has significant experience in prescribing solutions to facilitate safe and effective manual handling, seating and positioning, falls prevention, dementia care, mobility and pressure injury prevention, and has assisted hundreds of other therapists with education in these areas and prescribing the optimal equipment solution for specific needs.
At the beginning of her presentation, Annette talked about evidence-based recommendations for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries. She discussed risk factors associated with the development of pressure injuries and drew in her own experiences dealing with clients who developed pressure injuries in different settings. Annette shared pictures of pressure injuries she’s personally attended to that were caused by unconventional methods and talked about how and why they started and what could have been done to prevent them.
In her practical sessions after lunch, Annette taught attendees how to select the right support surfaces for specific needs and evaluated different repositioning and mobilization techniques to suit clients in different clinical situations.
Participants particularly enjoyed Annette’s practical session surrounding the techniques of using pressure care products more effectively and indicated on their feedback forms that they benefitted greatly from her teachings.
Thank you
