Seminar: Together we can STOP Pressure Injuries
– Worldwide STOP Pressure Injury Day
Technology Park Function Centre, Bentley
Thursday, 19 November 2020
On Worldwide STOP Pressure Injury Day, Unicare Health took the opportunity to provide clinicians in Western Australia with updated pressure care education.
Leading with our ‘enabling power of applied knowledge‘ and offering the benefit of being ‘the conduit that matches optimal solutions to specific need‘, the purpose of this seminar was to provide clinicians involved in pressure injury prevention and management with updated knowledge and skills that would enable them to become better healthcare providers and more confident prescribers of pressure care devices.
The prevention and management of pressure injuries is an internationally recognised issue in healthcare. #stopthepressure is an initiative driven by Unicare Health to stop pressure injuries from developing through the education of effective prevention & management techniques and intelligent use of pressure care devices.
Following the widespread success of #stopthepressure events across WA since 2018, this was a much-anticipated event, attended by close to 150 clinicians involved in pressure injury prevention and management across hospitals, aged care and disability settings.
Annette Terranova, clinical educator and trainer for Unicare Health, delivered the session following the latest Clinical Practice Guidelines developed by the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) and Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance (PPPIA). These international guidelines have been developed using a rigorous scientific methodology to appraise available research and make evidence-based recommendations reinforced worldwide.
Annette attends NPUAP and EPUAP events annually, to seek the most up to date research knowledge and practice strategies surrounding pressure injury prevention and management. She also attends local wound and injury conferences around Australia to keep abreast with latest developments in these areas.
In her seminar, Annette talked about evidence-based recommendations for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries and discussed risk factors associated with the development of these avoidable injuries in different settings.
She also stressed on the importance of selecting the right support surfaces for specific needs and evaluated different repositioning and mobilization techniques.
Annette took the opportunity to show clinicians how the limitations of traditional pressure care devices have been addressed with new innovations and technology using Care of Sweden‘s new range of pressure care mattresses.
References to Pressure Care Mattresses by Care of Sweden discussed in this seminar can be found in this catalogue.
Annette enjoyed a highly engaging time with her audience and encouraged them to be intelligent about pressure care equipment. She taught clinicians what features and technologies to look for when prescribing pressure care products to suit different needs.
Clinicians enjoyed an insightful time at this seminar, participating in quizzes, asking intelligent questions and indicating on their feedback forms how valuable the information presented was in their quest to prevent and manage pressure injuries in their workplace.
